I decided to create something that I wish I had when I first got diagnosed with autism - so here’s my comic for ASDComicTakeover!
You can find out more about the project here!
the fact that sonic and shadow look nearly identical when shadow was specifically designed by a scientist to be The Ultimate Life Form implies that sonic is the closest thing to an ultimate life form that can occur randomly in nature. imagine if a guy spent years trying to create God and after succeeding God walked outside and found Zeus just chilling with mortals and eating a chili dog
p.s. i do like that the ultimate life form is a hedgehog
with the idea of tumblr reading frankenstein next floating around, and people pointing out the whole "victor married his cousin!!!" thing, i'd like to bring back my theory that mary shelley likely did not intend for victor and elizabeth to be accepted as a good couple. they were an arranged marriage, something mary shelley was against (she and percy were radicals who believed that marriage was repressive, and the only reason they got married themselves was for the legal benefits). it's pretty evident if you compare victor and elizabeth's relationship to any other couple from 19th century literature (like jonathan and mina, for example) because then you'll notice a distinct lack of romantic gestures on victor's part, something that was pretty unusual considering victorians' tendency to go overboard with writing love (seriously, go read any other book with a romantic subplot from that century and compare it to frankenstein). hell, victor spends a good deal of time in the novel fully ignoring elizabeth.
also, victor and elizabeth's marriage being a result of what victor's parents chose for them fits with the themes of the novel, especially about how parents/"creators" impact their creations. victor and elizabeth were 4 years old when victor's mom decided they should be a couple, so they grew up sort of accepting it as a fact that they're going to be married someday. even though, toward the end, elizabeth does eventually ask him if he wants to back down from the marriage, the way she poses the question is by asking him whether he met any other girl he would rather marry, to which he truthfully answers no. it's not explicitly addressed whether he's in love with elizabeth herself.
it's highly likely that victor was never truly in love with elizabeth and that he only agreed to marry her to please his parents. so if anyone were to be blamed for their marriage, it's victor's mom and dad. also victor is probably gay
I feel like this also creates an interesting dynamic with how the creature specifically requested a wife. Very quickly the creature had ingrained this idea that if victor just created a female creature that they would naturally marry, not really bothering to consider what feelings she might have. Plenty of feminist scholars have pointed out that this idea being taken seriously by Victor legitimizes women's autonomy just as much as the male characters autonomy in the book, which absolutely adds to the themes of the book and to Shelley's beliefs.
Because of the creature's loneliness, he wants what the people in his society have--family--so much so that he's blind to idea that she'll have thoughts and feelings that might be different than his. Something that Victor actually considers (a rare instance of him thinking thoroughly) before considering to get rid of the second creature he was making. I don't think it's a mistake that he considered this since his relationship with Elizabeth is distant (even if they care about each other, they're hardly the gothic lit expectation of devotion) the second creature might be distant too.
In a way, the creature is repeating victor's mistakes. Blinded by grief over his lost mom and self-isolation and hopes of grandeur, victor makes the creature without considering what it might want or need. Blinded by grief over rejection from his "dad" and basically everyone's isolation, the creature begs for a companion without considering what it might want or need. Victors parents, though loving, sowed the seeds for his neglect of the creature through his moms dying request for victor to marry elizabeth--subliminally indicating that the creators of something or someone can narrate a future without considering the will of the being created.
traditional yelling-and-hitting abusive parent bruce wayne is SO boring to me okay. give me a man who is doing his best and his best isn't good enough. the harder he tries the worse it becomes. he wants to do right by them. he is constitutionally incapable of doing right by himself. he cannot begin to comprehend what it does to a person to see a person they care for, who has cared for them, destroy himself. you are the child and you thought he was the adult but he's never been the adult. he locked himself in stasis so he could hold his trauma forever and he'll never accept that he's allowed to let it go. he's hurting himself and he's always been hurting himself and you can never let on that it hurts you because he won't stop, he'll just put more distance between you, enough that he thinks you won't notice anymore. you thought he was going to save you but he was drowning before you even got here. you love him and you hate him for making you love him and for making you watch him stagger under the weight of all his masks. but as long as there's a crisis, as long as there's someone else to save, it's fine. it can be fine. you can save someone, somewhere. you can do it together and it can feel like helping. you have all these feelings and nowhere to put them because you can never tell anyone. because that wouldn't be fair to him. they wouldn't understand. he's doing his best.
you are a child and your life has gone to shit, or maybe it's always been shit, but regardless you're here right now because you have Problems. and you are so young, and you are so angry, and none of the solutions anyone has ever offered you feel as good as the idea of being batman. this guy. this guy has it figured out. you are as sure of this as you have ever been of anything. if you could be batman, or something close to batman, that would fix it. that would fix something.
but he tells you, you don't need to do that. you don't need to do anything. you don't owe anything to anyone. you deserve to be safe. you deserve to be happy. you deserve a normal life. he won't let you get hurt. he says all the right things, the good things, except it seems like you're the only one who can hear the other part. the unlike me.
you try so hard to be good enough. he would tell you that you've always been good enough, but you know participation trophy bullshit when you hear it. you have to be good enough. you have to be able to hold your own. you have to be strong enough. you have to prove that he doesn't have to carry it all on his own. you can help. you can be the one that saves him back.
but it's never good enough. no matter how good you are, no matter how strong, how smart, how fast, how well you save the day, there is never a time that you will get anything better than just:
you didn't have to do that. i never asked you to do that. i didn't want you to do that. please don't do that again.
when fanfics say something like “tim isnt as smooth with girls as dick or jason are” wrong. you are so wrong. tim is a major heartthrob in canon, in both identities. robin tim was the prime example of a hot teenage superhero that girls used when comparing their crushes. civilian tim had like 5 different girls (and at least 1 guy) fall in love with him, sometimes two or more at the same time. two girls went full supervillain trying to win his heart. dude even managed to flirt with someone from another universe during the dc vs marvel crossover while everyone else was beating each other up. tim gets so many bitches in canon and it’s time we stop pretending otherwise
i just watched swiss army man after seeing multiple people say it completely altered their brain chemistry and i think i really underestimated how much they meant that. like. i feel like my brain was put in a waffle maker then flipped over. like it’s been put into a meat grinder and twisted out. like my brain was the turkey and this movie was a family of 7 eating a thanksgiving feast
Warning: flashing lights/bright colors/Sonic Prime spoilers
This is the plot of Sonic Prime, right?
